Dress to Impress

Hello bloggers, sorry for the delay in this post. Dressing appropriately in college is definitely a weird topic, and I’m sure you are thinking that I’m crazy. I promise that I’m not. I’m not talking about what you wear to class on a daily basis. I’m talking about what you wear to class when you do a presentation or what to wear when going to a career fair. I’m talking about the fact that the way you dress can say something about who you are as a person. And considering it’s the first thing people see when they meet you, you should probably think about it a little more sometimes.

General Dressing

It’s really not that important what you wear to class on a daily basis. May I suggest though that you consider looking a little nicer for your first day of class. You are making a first impression. It is very important to make a good impression. You are meeting your professor and other people. So dress comfortably and be yourself, but save the sweatpants and yoga pants for another day when you need them.

Dressing for Presentations

Presentations inevitably happen in college. It might be a communications course or a business presentation. Either way it’s going to happen, and you want to look your best. Most of the time your professor will tell you what type of dress is appropriate. They may say casual, business causal, or business formal. Business formal we will talk about later, but the difference between casual and business casual is important. Causal is usually khakis or really nice jeans and a polo or nice shirt. Business Casual is more like dress pants (blue or black) and a button down shirt for males. Females can wear pants (blue or black) or a skirt and a blouse or nice shirt. I like to think of it as you “Sunday best” or just your best look.

Career Fair/Interviews

It’s really important to look your very best when attending a career fair or interview. What you wear sends a particular message to the employer. If you look sloppy with an untucked shirt or dirty clothing, you are not giving a good impression to your employer. You need to have a clean outfit that is polished looking. This type of dress is the business formal I mentioned earlier. Guys try to wear a suit. You at least need to wear dress pants, a dress shirt and a tie, but adding a blazer or suit jacket will really set you a part. Ladies try to wear a skirt or pant suit in black or navy. Black is still the safest choice. Stay conservative with the shirt you wear under the suit jacket, but try to add a pop of color into it to bring attention to your face.
